A guest at Khaolak Merlin enjoyed the thick vegetation but found the grounds large enough to lose their way back to the room. I like that detail because it describes the resort more clearly than the word tropical. The trees and separate pool areas are part of how the place is arranged, not simply decorations beside one main building.
The hotel's own account explains the design. When it opened in 2003, the owners aimed to retain much of the existing forest landscape. Its resort page says the garden occupies 40 percent of the site, and describes pools shaped around lagoons and waterfalls. That is the hotel's explanation of its approach, rather than a claim that I have measured the grounds myself.
For someone who enjoys walking, a garden like that can be a reason to stay. The walk between the room, pool, and beach is part of its appeal for me. A traveller who wants a compact hotel with every facility close together might see the same layout differently.

The pools need a little explanation. One guest noted that some were reserved for pool-access rooms, while the shared pools were spread out. Their account is useful because several pools in a photograph can easily look like several pools available to every guest. The actual room and pool arrangement matters here.
A family liked a pool slide and found restaurants a short walk outside the resort. Another guest was less impressed by the nearby food options and preferred going into Khao Lak centre. Those two accounts do not amount to a complete restaurant guide. They show that eating outside is possible, while the choice may not suit every visitor equally.
There was also a report of sunbeds being fully occupied. The same guest described loungers on the grass rather than the sand because of the changing tide. It is one stay, not a daily occupancy survey, but it is worth keeping beside the wide aerial photograph. A large property does not mean every desirable spot is available at every moment.
Sources and scope
This is a researched editorial review, not an account of a personal stay.
Five Agoda comments dated May 2024–May 2026 were read. The official resort-concept page was checked. Pool-use restrictions, occupied sunbeds, and difficulty finding the room are one guest's January 2026 account. Nearby-dining opinions differ. No tour pickup time or island departure schedule is claimed.
